Replacing Steel Hull Panels - Project Brupeg Ep. 180

What this video covers

Replacing steel hull panels on a former fishing trawler requires precise alignment and a three-pass welding technique to ensure structural integrity. To fit a new 6mm steel plate, the crew cuts a 1mm gap around the perimeter, using a 1mm grinding disc to trim both the hull and the plate simultaneously. Because welding causes thermal expansion, the plate must not be tight against the hull to prevent cracking. The crew uses custom-fabricated "dogs"—small steel brackets with wedges—to pull the plate flush with the hull before tack welding. For the final join, they bevel the edges of both the plate and the hull to create a V-groove, then perform a root run followed by two cap runs on both the inside and outside of the hull. This multi-pass method provides redundancy if one weld fails. To mitigate fire risks from hot slag during welding, the crew places wet rags along the hull edges.
