What this video covers
Preparing a boat for launch requires a systematic safety inspection to prevent sinking, structural decay, and fire. Begin by inspecting all through-hulls and seacocks for corrosion, cracks, or resistance; replace any gate valves immediately. Ensure all hoses are double-clamped with stainless steel clamps in opposing directions. Check stuffing boxes for the rudder and prop shaft, ensuring the flax cord remains pliable and the shaft moves freely.
Prevent deck core rot by identifying and sealing water intrusion points. Inspect port lights, hatches, and deck hardware—specifically jib tracks—for leaks. Use a moisture meter or heel pressure to locate soft spots in the deck, then prioritize re-bedding the hardware that caused the moisture. Verify fire safety by checking propane systems, installing gas sniffers, and ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors function. Inspect standing rigging for rust at swage fittings, check clevis pins and cotter pins, and tune the rig. Finally, service winches, change engine oil and coolant, inspect the raw water impeller, and organize dock lines for emergency use.
Prioritizing structural and mechanical integrity ensures the vessel is seaworthy before addressing secondary systems like electronics or refrigeration.
