What this video covers

To streamline the production of frames for the 108-year-old yacht Tally Ho, the crew constructed a custom 3-foot by 12-foot planing jig designed to flatten rough-sawn live oak.▶ 2:39 Unlike standard router-based sleds that require a fixed depth of cut, this jig utilises a 7-inch planer mounted on a sliding carriage with a lift system.▶ 1:35 This configuration allows for incremental material removal, enabling volunteers with minimal training to surface heavy timber before it passes through a thicknesser.▶ 3:54 The carriage slides on melamine-coated surfaces lubricated with grease, and nyloc nuts on the lift screws eliminate the need for secondary locking mechanisms.▶ 5:09 Additionally, the team built a dedicated assembly table to ensure frame components remain level and accurately aligned during construction.▶ 8:18 Frames are fastened with black locust trunnels rather than glue to accommodate the natural movement and shrinkage of green timber, with rot-inhibiting primer applied to joints to prevent moisture-related decay.▶ 12:26
