The crew of the 66-foot vessel NV, currently in Fiji, diagnosed a drivetrain failure after the propeller spun freely while the engine was engaged.0:51 Suspecting a corroded propeller-to-shaft connection, the crew performed an underwater inspection by free-diving to remove the propeller blades and body.7:36 They blocked the engine flywheel from inside the boat to test the shaft connection, confirming the propeller remained attached to the shaft.4:45 Further investigation revealed the failure originated in the coupling disc—a sacrificial anti-shock component between the engine and gearbox—which had disintegrated.25:05 To maintain mobility while awaiting parts, the crew installed a 25-horsepower, two-stroke outboard engine on the stern.18:54 They also developed a contingency plan to create a dry-work environment underwater using a submerged, air-filled drum sealed against the hull, should they need to access the sail drive or gearbox without hauling out.15:05 The failure of the coupling disc prevented power transfer to the gearbox, which remained intact.25:05
