The Bristol Yachts 39 is a masthead sloop with a long keel, designed by Ted Hood and Dieter Empacher, built by Bristol Yachts from 1966 to 1970.0:25 Fifty-eight hulls were produced, with a nearly identical Bristol Yachts 40 succeeding it. The 11.9 m LOA cruiser has a 3.3 m beam, 1.6 m draft, and displaces 7974 kg. Designed to the Cruising Club of America rulebook, the Bristol 39 features a solid fiberglass hull, an encapsulated lead keel, and an inward-flange hull-to-deck joint.5:23 Its narrow beam and long overhangs contribute to a design that heels quickly and requires early reefing.4:05 The boat offers a stable, sea-kindly motion offshore, though its positive riding moment is lower than modern wide-body cruisers.6:21 Owners should expect maintenance typical of older vessels, including potential deck-core moisture, chainplate fatigue, and aging electrical or plumbing systems.5:46 The interior volume is modest, and the aperture-mounted propeller can make close-quarters maneuvering challenging.7:10 A keel/centerboard version was also available.6:29
