Aboard Distant Shores TV, Paul and Sheryl Shard sailed a Southerly 49, noting that vessels around 50 feet provide smoother motion and faster passage times on ocean crossings compared to smaller boats.7:36 The Shards sold their Southerly 49 due to the pandemic, which allowed them time to oversee the construction of a new custom aluminum lifting-keel expedition yacht.13:59 They emphasized that their cruising plans, including high-latitude voyages to Svalbard, are often inspired by peers.2:49
