What this video covers
After a mid-ocean collision 800 miles off the coast of Africa, the crew of the J46 sailboat Sweet Ruca discovered water leaking into the hull near the rudder post while sailing in Brazil.0:14 Upon hauling the boat out in Itajaí, they identified a puncture on the upper edge of the rudder that allowed water to penetrate the balsa core.3:49 The crew utilised the boat's internal scrimp-method construction, which features epoxy-sealed honeycomb voids, to limit the water damage to a localised area.5:11 They removed the damaged core from the inside, ground out the surrounding fibreglass, and prepared the area for a vacuum-bagged repair.13:22 To facilitate the drying and lamination process, they sourced a vacuum pump from a local boat builder and purchased marine supplies, including AkzoNobel paint, from a nearby chandlery.10:32 The repair plan involves scarfing the edges, installing new core with adhesive filler, and vacuum-bagging the new laminates to the existing hull.14:33
