The Swan 48 - S&S is a Sparkman & Stephens-designed masthead sloop built by Nautor from 1971 to 1976. This 14.6-meter sailboat features a fin keel with a rudder on a skeg and displaces 16,329 kg. It was also marketed in the US as the Palmer Johnson 48/50, and at least one teak version was constructed by Sangermani of Italy. The design, S&S #2079, was available in sloop or ketch configurations, with a tall rig option and a variant featuring an extended counter. Andy Schell of 59° North Sailing considers a sail-area-to-displacement ratio between 17 and 19 to be ideal for offshore boats, noting that anything below 15 is off his list.
