The Hans CHRISTIAN 34 is a Robert H. Perry-designed cutter-rigged sailboat with a long keel, built in limited numbers between 1974 and 1979 by Hans Christian and Union Ship Co. in Taiwan. Measuring 10.4 m LOA with a 3.4 m beam and 1.8 m draft, it displaces 8799 kg. This model served as the predecessor to the more widely produced Hans Christian 36 and Union 36, a stretched version not authorized by Perry. Aboard *Pompoen*, Gunnar Kristiansen, a professional yacht captain, prepared his Hans CHRISTIAN 34 for the 2026 Golden Globe Race by rebuilding the bowsprit, replacing the standing rigging and aluminum mast with a Selden spar package, and re-bedding the stanchions to address leaks.1:46 He replaced the original wooden forward hatch with a Lewmar unit, installed a solid-fuel stove for heating, and rewired the electrical system with four batteries and a combined GPS/AIS unit.7:28 The boat retains its original worm-gear steering system and is powered by a 20-year-old Beta 38 engine.16:32 Kristiansen purchased the boat in Trinidad and completed a 4,000-mile transatlantic passage.watch
