The Hans CHRISTIAN 34 is a Robert H. Perry-designed cutter-rigged sailboat with a long keel, built in Taiwan by Hans Christian and Union Ship Co. from 1974 to 1979. With an LOA of 10.4 m, a beam of 3.4 m, and a displacement of 8799 kg, it is a heavy displacement design. The Hans CHRISTIAN 34 was produced in relatively small numbers and served as the predecessor to the Hans Christian 36 and Union 36, which were stretched versions. Aboard 59° North Sailing, Gunnar Kristiansen prepared a Hans CHRISTIAN 34 for the Golden Globe Race, acknowledging its heavy displacement but arguing for its competitive potential in such events.31:46
