Aboard "Be The Captain," James Evenson sailed an Islander 28 engineless for over a year, crediting it with developing his seamanship. He recommends the Islander 28 as a dry, simple, and well-sailing boat suitable for sailors on a tight budget seeking an educational platform rather than a "forever boat." Practical Sailor notes that a $9,000 Islander 28 can offer significant value for gunk-holing if its diesel engine and hull are sound.
