The Ericson Yachts 38 is a Bruce King-designed masthead sloop built by Ericson Yachts from 1979 to 1987, featuring a fin keel with a spade rudder, an LOA of 11.5 meters, a beam of 3.7 meters, and a displacement of 6350 kg. It was offered with multiple draft options, including a standard shoal draft of 1.5 meters, an optional wing keel of 1.52 meters, and a deep keel of 1.98 meters. A variant, the Ericson 38-200, introduced around 1986, shared the same hull but featured a new deck, coach roof, and interior. Aboard *Thelonious*, Christian Williams sails his Ericson 38 off the Southern California coast, demonstrating single-handed maneuvers like slab reefing and jib management in 17 knots of wind, and using a Raymarine EV100 wheel pilot for steering.5:29 He performs maintenance such as descaling the engine's raw water system with Barnacle Buster, repairing an inflatable dinghy, and replacing a failed refrigeration unit with an Isotherm system.7:59 Williams also customizes the boat with a 90% jib for easier harbor tacks, weather cloths with leather wear patches instead of a dodger, and a market umbrella for sun and rain protection.8:30 He notes the ongoing stewardship required for cruising boat ownership, including incremental improvements like replacing companionway hatch acrylics and constructing a V-berth step.21:43
