It measures 11.5 meters LOA, with a 3.7-meter beam, 1.5-meter draft, and displaces 6350 kg. The model has multiple draft options, including a shoal draft of 1.5 meters and a deep keel option of 1.98 meters, and a variant, the Ericson 38-200, introduced around 1986, shares the same hull but features a new deck, coach roof, and interior. Aboard his Ericson 38, Christian Williams demonstrates slab reefing and jib management in 17 knots of wind, emphasizing consistent habits for safety during high-wind maneuvers.13:26 He sails the boat off the Santa Monica coast, often single-handed with a Raymarine EV100 wheel pilot, and has installed a Cape Horn Integral Servo Pendulum steering gear for longer passages, noting its sensitivity to sail trim.11:18 Williams has prepared his boat for a 6,000-mile solo voyage, carrying a Jordan Series drogue, 90 days of food, and 65.9 gallons of diesel fuel.11:44 He has replaced an Adler Barber refrigeration system with an Isotherm unit and uses a 90% jib for easier short tacks with guests.16:22
