The Boreal 44 is a 13.8-meter cutter-rigged sailboat with a keel/centerboard hull and spade rudder, designed by Jean-Francois Delvoye and built by Boreal SARL since 2010. It displaces 10,289 kg, has a 4.3-meter beam, and a 2.5-meter draft. The Boreal 44 features a 45 m2 mainsail and a 55 m2 genoa, with an optional 75 hp engine. Twin daggerboards are located near the stern. A Boreal 44 transported a six-man expedition team to Kvitøya in the Svalbard archipelago, navigating north of Svalbard to avoid heavy ice.1:41 Aboard the Boreal 44, the crew encountered katabatic winds of 25–30 meters per second at Kræmerpynten, preventing anchoring due to drifting ice and dangerous seas.14:34 After landing the ski team at Andréeneset via RIB, the Boreal 44 sailed to Tromsø, Norway, experiencing 6–7 meter seas and high winds.16:36
