The Baltic Yachts 42 DP is a 12.8-meter masthead sloop designed by Doug Peterson and built by Baltic Yachts from 1981 to 1985, known for its fin keel and spade rudder. The prototype was 'Big Shadow', a sister design to the SERENDIPITY 43. Aboard *Northern Brees*, a Baltic Yachts 42 DP, the crew has sailed extensively in high latitudes, including a 266-nautical-mile passage from Iceland to the Faroe Islands, where they encountered "washing machine" sea states and unreliable GPS signals.2:18 They have navigated the Bay of Biscay, managing tidal constraints and 40-to-50-knot winds, and transited the English Channel, dealing with heavy shipping, dense fog, and 35-knot squalls.13:21 The crew has performed extensive maintenance, including replacing a Perkins 4-108 engine damper and a broken engine mount, and sourcing replacement turnbuckles for their cutter-rigged mast.8:21 They have found the Swedish canal system difficult and advise against it.17:50
