The Ovni 435 is a 12.9-meter aluminum cutter-rigged sailboat with a lifting keel, designed by Philippe Briand and built by Chantier Alubat from 2004 to the present. Its aluminum hull provides ice resistance and superior insulation, allowing for comfortable sailing in cold climates; a previous Ovni 435 owner, Jon Amtrup, reported that the interior remained warm at minus 20°C.7:38 The boat displaces 10,299 kg and has a 2.5-meter draft. Aluminum hulls require specific electrical configurations to prevent corrosion, including an isolated DC ground system strictly separated from the hull and an isolation transformer for the AC system.0:52 A ground fault monitor is recommended to detect accidental connections between the DC system and the hull.1:42 For lightning protection, the mast and rigging must maintain a low-resistance path directly to the hull and the surrounding water.3:33
