The Pearson Yachts 36 is a 11.1-meter masthead sloop designed by William H. Shaw and built by Pearson Yachts from 1972 to 1976, conceived with the IOR 1-ton rule in mind. Its hull features a fin keel with a rudder on a skeg, displacing 6123 kg with a 1.8-meter draft.10:54 Aboard *Sailing Uma*, the Pearson 36 underwent extensive refit work to address known structural issues, including hull delamination at the knee where lower shrouds attach, a problem also seen in the sister-ship Pearson 10 Meter.7:31 This fix involved reinstalling bulkheads, glassing in additional stringers, and adding hull layers internally.8:05 The crew also dropped the 6,000-pound lead keel to replace bolts after a decade of deferral and prior grounding damage that caused the keel to wobble.1:22 They reinforced the hull with five additional fiberglass floors and, after drilling out the original bronze J-bolts, installed eight one-inch stainless steel bolts with G10 backing plates and JB Weld.16:56 The keel stub was further reinforced with seven layers of vacuum-bagged fiberglass and 20 kilograms of resin, exceeding original factory strength.17:59
